What is the best DSLR camera for me?

I’ve been looking over Internet for reviews but none is proper. I’m an armature photographer and have used only point and shoot by Nikon Coolpix, so which DSLR would be best for me, preferably by Nikon and cost below $700, also which Nikkor lens would be best to click both portraits and landscapes.
I need the depth a professional camera has in it’s pictures, e.g. while clicking still lives and landscapes.
Until now I’ve preferred D3100 as D5100 has been discontinued, many prefer D40 and D400, but I don’t know which among these would be a better option.

first you need to get your models in order
the D3100 was released last year, and will not be replaced for another year or so
the D5100 just recently came out and is one of the best entry level cameras on the market
the D3000 has been discontinued
the D5000 has been discontinued
the D40 was the predecessor to the D3000, therefore discontinued (D40 discontinued 3-4 years ago)
the D400 does not exist yet. Nikon is supposedly going to reveal some new cameras soon, and the D400 might be among them

for $700, the best you can do is the D3100, with $50 to spare.

to get a lens that is both good in portraits and landscapes may be nonexistant. Stick to the kit 18-55mm lens to begin with and then choose if you want a portrait lens or landscape (wide angle) lens first.
