Thank you!!

For a mere $44.04 difference in price the Sony wins on that alone. Add in interchangeable lenses and a sensor that is almost 13 times larger and the Sony becomes a no-brainer in my opinion.

Since both the A290 and SX 30 IS have 14mp and the sensor in the A290 measures 23.5mm x 15.7mm while the sensor in the SX 30 measures 6.16mm x 4.62mm the pixels in the SX30 sensor are very tiny. Tiny pixels translates into poor performance at higher ISO settings and in low-light situations – where you need a higher ISO. These articles will give you a better understanding of why sensor size is more important than megapixels:

Anyone who claims there is a limited number of lenses available for a Sony DSLR is wrong – very wrong. When Sony bought the DSLR technology and manufacturing rights from Konoca-Minolta in 2006 they wisely kept the “A” lens mount introduced by Minolta with the Maxxum 7000 in 1985. So any Maxxum AF lens made from 1985 forward can be used on the entire Sony DSLR camera line. Add in the lenses offered by Konica-Minolta for their 5D and 7D DSLRs plus the Carl Zeiss lenses offered for Sony DSLRs plus the lenses offered by Tamron, Sigma and Tokina and you’ll find more lenses then you could ever need or want.

If your budget allows, you might want to consider the latest from Sony – the SLT A33. This DSLR uses Sony’s Translucent Mirror Technology which allows for continuous full-time auto focus whether you’re shooting still pictures or video. It also allows shooting at 7 frames per second which makes it a good choice for sports. At B&H its $699.99 after a $50.00 Instant Savings from B&H. Here are a couple of reviews of the SLT A33:

The Sony SLT A55 is being heavily promoted by Sony since it has a few features not found on the SLT A33 such as built-in GPS and the capability of shooting at 10 frames per second. Its $849.99 at B&H. This review compares these Sony siblings:

Another worthy contended is the Pentax K-x. In 2010 the Technical Image Press Association chose the K-x as their “Best DSLR Entry Level”. Here is a review of it:

At $499.00 at B&H it offers more features than the Sony A290 and would be, in my opinion, an even better choice.

Most “bang for the buck” – Pentax K-x

Latest technology – Sony SLT A33/A55

Least desirable in my opinion? Any “bridge” camera. Far too limiting for the price.
