Nice camera – my first digital. The continuity of the EOS lenses and control logic making it easier for digital technology – especially since I have some goals from the days of film. Nice feel and very useful.
The kit lens is a miserable piece – strong enough, but a large front lens rotates to focus on, feel heavy for cheese (which is needed in these focal lengths?), But not with the feeling of the body at large.

Canon XSi Delivers on Quality
I purchased the Canon Rebel XSi about a month ago after much deliberation about when to buy and which Rebel model to select. I decided on a Canon for two reasons. I own a 35mm Rebel Xs SLR (familiar) and Canon lenses. The lens is what really makes an SLR shine and there are a vast assortment of canon EF and EF-S lenses available. I particularly like the EF L series lenses which I plan to buy ‘used’ as my budget allows. The XSi model allows me to take advantage of these lenses without going to a full frame DSLR or the more expensive APC D series cameras. At the time that I purchased I had four Rebel choices: Rebel XS, XSi, T1i or T2i. I was tempted toward the T2i but cautioned toward the XS or XSi models. The T1 and T2 cameras offer video at high def but neither can auto focus while recording video so until that improves it will not suite me. Ultimately I decided against these because of price and cost of ownership. These cameras are impressive but in order to edit the HD video you will need a computer that can handle the format and also be able to render HD video without taking up half a day. I already own a Standard Def Canon FS-10 camcorder that I have owned for about a year and have yet to fully exploit it. I ruled out the XS based on resolution, metering and the LCD screen all of which are much better in the XSi. The XSi is a superb camera and with an L lens is awesome. I have the kit lens but have borrowed some higher quality EF ‘L’ series lenses and the difference the lens makes is astounding. Ultimately if you must spend money buy a solid camera like the XSi and spend the bulk of your money on the lens. Happy with my XSi.

Excellent Product! Get It!
I received this camera exactly on the date Amazon said it would arrive. It came in a brand new un-opened box. The camera takes wonderful pictures. You can change the settings to get the exact look you want it to be. My advice is once you get the camera kit, it is best to also get the other equipment to go with it like a camera bag to hold your camera in. I didn’t have a camera bag to my sister’s graduation but I wrapped it in the packaged bubblewrap that the camera came in. Then after the graduation, it started raining so I had to wait til the completely stopped to bring it out. Also get good lens and a tripod to get nonblurry photos! Trust me, it does make a difference. Camera is light and not too bulky. Keep the screen and lens clean at all times for better looking photos.

canon camcorder or camera?
I just bought a canon vixia hf200 a little while ago, but now I see for only about $100 more I could get a canon rebel T2i which does 1080p video and 30fps. Doesn’t my camcorder only do 1080i??? And the stills on the camcorder are only 3.2mp. The T2i does 18mp stills. Am I missing something, or do these SLR cameras make camcorders pointless?
I’m no camera/camcorder expert, but I’m wondering if I should sell my camcorder and get a Canon T2i camera. I don’t currently even have a good digital camera, though video recording is my main concern. What do you guys think?
keep in mind both the camcorder and camera can record in 16bit stereo audio and full hd1080
If you’re recording video – get a camcorder. It’s their raison-d’etre. If you’re shooting stills, get a still camera of some description.
The sound on a dSLR is awful, highly compressed (usually), monaural with the cheapest microphone ever devised my mankind.
The video on a dSLR might (just ‘might’) be difficult to edit depending upon editing software and compression techniques and it’s limited to the size of the card or the size of the maximum permissible file size – <4GB* (or about 10 minutes) as all that camera's file system is FAT32.
The video on a camcorder (at least a 'proper' one that runs Mini-DV tape or better) is limited by tape-length only, audio is usually better than mono, sound and video are not compressed, sound sampling is better, there are three CCD's which capture far more information than the single CCD of SLR's...the list of benefits goes on and on.
*file size limit is technically ((2^32)-1)) bytes but the FAT32 protocol restricts this limit still further. But nobody's interested, are they?
