best shutter speed for shooting night sports?
I have been shooting my Nieces soccer games, and although pictures have been coming out pretty good even no I am using a low end lens next week they start night games. The field will be lit up with lights, but it will be pitch dark out. The camera I have been using is my Nikon D7000 and my lens is Tamron 300mm F5, I also have a speed light that I can use as well SP-600.
I tried a few night games at other schools to get me ready, and all the pics came out dark or badly blurred. Normally I am a landscape photographer so this is a new thing for me. Any thoughts from the pro-sports shooters out there with my equipment whats the best shutter speed & aperture to use when shooting at night.
In case your wondering I stand at one corner shooting down the field, and usually stay around 180-220mm when shooting. sometimes 100mm when their fighting at the goal net…
You are going to find you need a much better lens. When shooting at night, under the lights for football I am using ISO 6400 to 12800, f/2.8 and a shutter of 1/500. I tried dropping that down to 1/400 on a field that had particularly crappy lights, but I got a LOT of motion in the images. Just didn’t work.
You flash won’t help you here as it is not powerful enough to reach the players on the field, so adding flash is probably not an option.
On our field, which has great lights I can sometimes use as high as f/3.5 at night, but not in the end zones.
With a 300mm lens your shutter speed must be above 1/300 just to avoid seeing camera shake. To stop motion of running and most especially kicking you have to be at AT LEAST 1/500. I get blur in the foot and ball for kickoffs and such.
