Information on Nikon D60 SLR Camera?
Okay, this is my first time buying a REAL camera. Not a teeny tiny digital. I am VERY interested in the Nikon D60. This is for everyday use, and I am going to TRY to do portraits at home of my children instead of paying tons of money to get them done professionally (we do pictures every month…a little overboard, but the kids change SO MUCH every DAY). So yeah, I have decided to just purchase a good camera on a budget. I have about $700 to spend right now. So basically, the camera and a memory card, lol. BUT, I can buy ad ons for it right? What kind of things can I get for it little by little in the future? I have heard great things about the Nikon D60, but still don’t know all the details. I just need some info I take TONS of pictures. I’m not into professional photography or anything, but who knows maybe I’ll get into it if I have a camera that takes decent pics
The D60 will be a fine camera for kid shots as well as general photography. If you take lots of indoor pictures, an external flash should be included so you can take bounce-flash pictures. The camera’s internal flash will give you horrible looking shots since it directly illuminates the subject. Bounce flash eliminates the harsh lighting often associated with flash pictures. For $110, you can get the SB400 which is small and fine for living room shots. The SB600 is the next step up going for $220. The SB600 has more power and is more versatile than the SB400, but it’s physically large. Flashes are also nice to use in sunlight to use as a fill flash to reduce harsh shadows.
Another useful gizmo is a remote control. Allows you to take self portraits, especially nice when taking group pictures. The remote is under $20.
Tripod is a nice thing to have.
As for lenses, the 18-55 mm lens that usually comes with the D60 is pretty good for general kid shots.
Borrow some books on basic photography from the library. To get the most from your camera, you need to learn how to control your camera. This is why you’re getting a DSLR. Auto mode will only take you so far.
