Looking into a Nikon D5100 – what do you recommend I get with it?

I’m looking into getting a Nikon D5100 but not exactly sure what to get with it. Is it really worth getting one of those kits? If so, which do you recommend? (I’ve been looking at the ones on Amazon mostly.) Or is it better to just to get better lenses separately?

I do a lot of shooting in low light (live shows, speedy hyper kids, etc.) and I do a lot of shooting outdoors. I’d prefer a good basic lens, and also a zoom one… and preferably both AF compatible with the D5100.

And filters, hood, case, any other accessories, if it’s cheaper to buy separately from the kit, or ones that may not come in a kit.

A lot of the stuff in those kits are entry level or worse.

A second lens in those kits is often a 55-200mm lens,. And while it is OK for daylight use, it is too slow for low-light use. But a good f/2.8 telephoto is going to be $900 on the cheap end (Sigma), and $2,400 on the expensive end (Nikon).

Having said that, my son has the Nikon 55-200 and does pretty well with it, but only in daylight conditions.

Filters especially are generally low grade. You would be better off buying them separately. Not necessarily cheaper, but better. I suppose in the long run it’s cheaper as you are not wasting money on those filters in the kits. For filters, stick with brands such as B+W, Hoya, and Tiffen.

In the long run, buying everything separately is a bit costlier, but it generally results in better equipment. The only exception is sometimes Nikon discounts a second lens if you buy it at the same time as the camera, and if you were going to buy that lens anyway, it might be the time to do it.
