Can anyone help me with a photography problem please.?

When I take a photo for example of a river, the grass and pebbles at the forefront of the picture look too bright.I use a Minolta Dimage Z1 digital camera on auto as I have no idea how to use the manual bit.Is there any way I can overcome this over exposure problem. Many thanks for any help.

If you shoot metering the highlight area, it will be slightly underexposed, so you may want to meter with both the foreground sun lit area and the shadow area.

The best way to avoid this is to make sure that the lighting on your subject is more uniform. If you are shooting into the shade, don’t let any of the area with direct sun get into your frame.

IF you have a recent version of Photoshop, you can shoot three shots of your landscape (using a tripod) and then let Photoshop compile them into one image … this kind of image can help a lot when shooting in difficult lighting situations like the one you described and are called HDR images.
