Please help! 50mm lens problems?

I have a Minolta Maxxum 3xi (it’s a film SLR) and a Minolta MD 50mm f/1.7 lens. I also have a lens mount adapter so that I can use the lens. I just received the adapter today and I put it on and everything, and then I tried focusing with the lens (I can only use manual focus since it’s an MD lens with an AF camera). I don’t know if I just suck at manual focusing or something, but I’ve been having difficulties. I can’t get anything in focus unless I go pretty close to it, even when I’m using a low f-stop. Is it because of the adapter? Or is there something wrong with the lens itself?

I would appreciate any answers/help you can offer…thank you for your time!
I just tried taking a picture, and it doesn’t work. I can take pictures when I use a different lens, but not this one. :|

If the lens gets too far away from the film plane, you lose the ability to focus on more distant objects. The adapter almost definitely moved the rear element too far.

On the bright side, you can now focus significantly closer than you could before. Take some close-up shots!
