what lenses to go with when buying a DSLR camera?

i think that i know what DSLR camera i would like to get, i think that i want to get the Canon EOS 50D but now i need to know what to look for in the lenses. i have finally figured out what i should look for in the body of the camera and next comes the accessories. i dont know what the numbers like “50-250mm” means…what are basic lenses that i should want to have right now. i am obviously not a professional photographer so i wont be doing like wedding photos or senior photos but i want lenses that will help me take great everyday shots. i am a graphic design major and photography is a part of my major so please dont suggest a point and shoot camera, i already know everything about them and now i am upgrading to a DSLR and need some help on the lenses.

I think you should probably get the 50D body only and then something like an 18-200 or the Tamron 18-250 or 18-270. Using a lens like that will allow you to shoot pretty much anything until you get more of your own style and know where you’re headed. You will learn what focal lengths are appropriate for which subjects and you will have learned about max apertures in lenses and will be able to decide which lenses you need.

@sound labs-If the OP has never used a standard 35mm camera and has never used a DSLR, but only P&S how exactly is she to immediately understand what the mm means? We all had to start somewhere.
