Canon EOS Rebel XTi – right choice at right price?
OK. So it appears I need a DSLR for my purposes and the Rebel XTi seems to be a recommended choice for a novice moving out of the point and shoot category. Package deal advertised for the Canon camera, 18-55 lense, 75-300 lense, Delkin 1 GB card, and tax free sale, all for $899.00. Mainly going for this camera to take pictures of kids in their sports (soccer, gymnastics, waterskiing, basketball, football) to get close up from the sidelines. So will these lenses in the kit get it done and does the price look right – from what I have researched it appears to be a good deal – so I guess the main issue is are these the lenses which will do the job of getting a close photo of my daughter on the uneven bars from the other side of the gym say 40 to 60 yards away? Or am I better off buying the body of the camera for as little as possible and going different lenses and memory card within the same $900.00. Thanks for your replies.
Just about any zoom will do outside in daylight. When you shoot in a gym it’s a different story — lighting is generally poor.
Your flash won’t reach 40 to 60 yards so you’ll have to crank up the ISO (luckily the XTi will go to 1600 fairly happily).
You may find the f5.6 aperture of the 75-300 at full zoom will not give you the necessary shutter speed to stop motion.
I’d try to get closer and use flash (if allowed) or find a faster lens.
