Any advice on what would be a good DSLR camera to get?

I’ve been into photography for some time but have only ever had a digital point and click. This Christmas I’d love to get a DSLR so I can start taking some really high-quality photos as I am getting frustrated with the ones I am currently taking. Whilst I am a beginner (of sorts) I’m not really looking for a ‘beginner’s camera’ as such, just one that will last me and is more or less user friendly. I’ve been looking at a number of Canon and Nikon models online but can’t work out which would be more suitable for me. I tend to take photos on a mix of subjects but I am quite into wildlife and spontaneous photography. As for price range, I’d rather pay a little more for quality but at the same time I’d like it to keep the price well below the £1,000 mark. (also on a side note I don’t need the ability to film HD movies or any other ‘bells and whistles’ just a really good solid camera!)

Present point and shoot cameras can come in excellent quality because the pixels are so high.
If you’re looking for a nice, basic solid DSLR, look into the NIkon D40, D40x, or D3000.
These cameras have basically the same features except the d40 comes in 6 mega pixels.
The D3000 has some other features but are practically the same, and at a great price.
