Sigma SD14 Digital Camera Resolution/Print Size/Foveon Sensor?
Does anyone have a Sigma SD14 camera? Can you describe the quality of the pictures. Also, approximately how large can you print the images and still preserve the quality? I am seriously considering purchasing this camera and would like more information. I am not familiar with the foveon sensor either.
I don’t own a Sigma camera so I can’t speak from experience. However I’d like to give you something to think about.
Sigma makes cameras for stuff like fashion photography. So the camera algorithms are designed for that kind of thing. That means softer contrasts and focus since this produces a better fashion picture. Now that’s not a problem if this is all you want to do but it can be a problem if you want to do other stuff as well. Just about any SLR will give you similar capabilities, you simply have to configure them accordingly.
The other issue is that Sigma cameras only take Sigma lenses. If you went for a Nikon or a Canon SLR you’d have the manufacturer’s lenses available to you as well as lenses from Sigma and Tamron for instance. That gives you much wider choices in terms of later options. Both Nikon ahd Canon also have professional bodies that are far superior to the Sigma so if you ever need to upgrade your camera body later at least you have a growth path to follow, something that you don’t have with Sigma.
Personally, I’d take a serious look at the Nikons and the Canons. At the entry level the Nikons have an edge, higher up however both makers produce incredible cameras though many insist that Nikon is more rugged and nicer to hold and use. You’d have to hold each to decide for yourself.
I use a Nikon D200 and before I bought that I did look at Sigma. There was no comparison. The Nikon has considerably more functionality built in and its control layout is second to none. However I’ll admit that the high end Canons are pretty well equal to that too.
In terms of your other question, a ten megapixel resolution will easily get you 11 x 14 prints with no loss in quality. You can go higher too but that would require some tweaking with something like Photoshop.
I’m sorry to not be able to speak to the Sigma directly, but I think if you look at the features of the other two makers you’ll be as impressed as I was.
I hope this helps a little.
