What Is Ccd In A Digital Camera?
The CCD (short for charge coupled device) camera is the optical sensor, which is the component that allows to transform the image from the objective into electricity and then into a video signal.
This is a relatively recent invention (Boyle and Smith in 1970) that revolutionized the world of television cameras, moving from bulky and expensive equipment to ever more compact and economical consumer products.
How does a black and white CCD work?
A camera has a lens that is capable of receiving the external light and recreate an image upside down at its focal point. At this point it is ranked the CCD.
It is composed of hundreds of thousands of microscopic units called pixels arranged on a precise grid gives each a vertical coordinate and a horizontal.
Each pixel is able to react to light which involves storing a certain electric charge.
The charge of the various pixel is read continuously (with a frequency variable adjusted the convenient electronic form) from a signal processing circuit, which is constantly aware of the amount of light that hit different pixels and is capable upon this
How does a color CCD work?
In the case of color CCD camera, the thing is a bit complicated
To achieve a color image is not enough just an indication of how much light strikes the CCD but also that of its color components. The cameras film cameras professional 3 CCD used for this purpose on each of which are projected components of green, red and blue image separated by a prism. This solution is however very expensive and is not for this use in CCTV. Conversely this is replaced by a device to allow a single CCD “understand” the colors of the image.
To make a color CCD camera is placed a grid on the CCD filter, where each pixel represents a filter to allow the passage of only parts green, red and blue.
An example of grid filter can be seen in the picture on the side. It is noted from the drawing that the number of green filter is twice the red and blue filters (25% blue, 25% red, 50% green) because the human eye is more sensitive to this color component.
What in the CCD monochrome er a pixel, it becomes rather an area in the color CCD for detection, said quadrant, consisting of two green pixels, one red and one blue. The circuit of the camera will only mix these components to derive the final color of that quadrant.
As you saw, where the CCD used a black and white pixels, the color CCD camera only uses 4, this explains why the cameras in black and white rule have a much higher resolution cameras in color.

What is the current state of the art professional digital microphotography setup available to image gemstones?
I photograph gemstones and want to know what is the most advanced digital microphotography system available to photograph these most challenging subjects for highest quality. I’m currently using a Nikon Coolpix camera attached to one of the oculars of a Leica microscope. Major drawbacks include great difficulty in critical focusing of tiny blemishes/nicks on stones because focusing is done on 1.5 inch grainy LCD screen on camera. Another drawback is unidirectional lighting coming from bolt on light source on microscope stage-I think I need 360 degree diffused lighting as otherwise some portions of stone are dark with current light setup. I have experimented with other light sources, like pipe type illuminators, but they are too strong and create hotspots in the stones. What is ideal light source–I think it must be diffused and 360 degree surrounding the stone. I’m looking for a dedicated system ideally where camera, scope and light system are made by same manufacturer.
I have had great success with using an inexpensive digital camera and a printers loupe.
It is really just a matter of the optics.
For a light source, I would suggest a light diffuser and 360 degree lighting. With a diffuser, you can vary the intensity of the light without losing the lighting angle.
BTW, I was shooting coins, not gemstones but I did manage to get coins to fill the entire viewable area of a 4MP shot with just the camera and a 10X loupe. it picked out flaws in the coin that were not seen with the naked eye.
For the right price, you could have an all in one system built for you. It would be quite interesting to build one.
