Off Camera Adjustable Power Flash?

I currently shoot with a Digital Canon Rebel EOS XSi and I am looking for an off camera (preferably hand-held) flash with adjustable intensity settings. Any good recommendations for a good price? I am a college student.

Almost all flash will allow you to adjust the intensity either directly – setting the power as 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 etc.. or indirectly by way of aperture. The higher the aperture you set, the more powerful the flash.

To trigger the flash, you need an off-camera cord. There are also wireless trigger. If you are using manual control, then any low cost triggers should do.

The Canon flash system uses ETTL which use the camera to control the flash. If you are using an ETTL compatible flash, you can set the relative power of the flash based on exposure ’stops’. This gives you a better control of the light. For this the flash has to be ETTL compatible and the camera has to communicate with the flash. Flash can be any of the Canon EX series, Metz, Nissin etc. To set this off camera with ETTL, you can use the Canon off-camera cord or in a wireless setup, the ST-E2 or a 3rd party product like Pocket Wizard. This setup is more expensive than the simple one above.

Recommendation: To maximise the flexibility of your system, get an ETTL flash (Canon or compatible). You can use the advance features on-camera. When using off-camera, use the Canon cord so that you will retain the advance capability or a simple wireless transmitter to save cost.
