Originally it was a little ‘history. We had the Nikon D40 for a while ‘and loved it. 6 megapixels is more than enough, and lasted about great images. Now, when a friend who feels the need to find the latest technology and get the best deals, I found a XSI Canon’s excellent price and jumped in head first. I immediately sold the D40, and we went a few months of pain with Canon. The images are blurry, color, and even if the warranty service, it still had its problems. So when Nikon D5000 arrived, I updated again … and could not be happier!
D5000 is a D40/D60 natural regeneration because it gives more power, more than megapixels (not important), videos, and best of all, an excellent low-light shots. But you have to buy their AF-S autofocus as the camera is not integrated, but there is so much available at this stage, not a big problem.
Swivel LCD screen behind it is also very useful for making difficult shots … Trust me, you can use it. This also provides an additional bonus to help protect the screen, you can turn around when the camera is not allowed.
The menus have also received a major update in this generation, and is very easy to use IMHO. Less clutter = better!
The wolf alone with the camera has the same attack is that all digital SLRs, is great. Slightly larger than the D40, but smaller than the D90. Honestly, I can not wait Micro Four Thirds cameras, prices fall, but until then I will feel free to use D5000 and enjoy a good wherever I go.

I bought this for myself as a birthday present. I’d used a Nikon CoolPix for many years, and decided to upgrade to a DSLR. I’ve always liked Nikons, but I have used my mom’s Olympus DSLR and really liked the extra features and manual capabilities. I’d researched the D5000, D3000 and comparable Cannon cameras. In the end, I liked the quality of the Nikon’s photos based on side-by-side comparisons. I’ve only had it for a little over a month, but my shots are so much better. I’ve got a good eye as far as my subject is concerned, but I was frustrated with the quality of my older camera. Now I see things I never saw before! The shutter speed is incredible. I haven’t had a chance to use all of the features, but even on the automatic setting, the image quality is so much better. I will update this review after I’ve had a chance to use it more.

What a Camera!!
We’re talking about one of the greatest cameras of all time.
The image quality is awesome, very easy to use, I can take it wherever I go, whenever I want because is compact and doesn’t require much space.. and it looks like I’ve been taking photos my whole life because of the great pics you can do with the Nikon D5000.
I also got the Nikon case and the Nikon School DVD for this camera and it was a very helpful purchase. It only takes one hour to see de video and learn a lot of the camera. It has a long list of useful tips for every automatic mode, and some for the manual and advanced modes, so you can understand the functions and all the things you can do the Nikon D5000.
I’m really happy with my camera.. Now I’m looking forward to get the 55-200 mm Nikkor Lens and some other accesories..
My First Nikon
i have been using this camera for little while now and all i can say is i couldn’t be more happy its great camera it takes beautiful pictures and its so easy to use a child can do it if you are new to digital camera i would highly recommend this camera i also have canon rebel XSI they are about same price and they both take great pictures as consumer i would like this because its very easy to use and if you don’t know what this button dose press help and it tells you what it dose its so cool its best camera i have ever owned and i am sold on Nikon Live View is OK its very slow to focus and in movie mode it doesn’t auto focus but i didn’t but this camera for video i bought to take a great pictures and it does that remarkably i would recommend this camera if you are looking to buy one

I bought this camera as a gift, and used it very little myself, but it is incredibly easy to use, and understand in the little time i had it in my hands, it is obviously a camera not for point and shoot, but for professional picture taking, however i would have to add to this I suppose when i hear from the owner of this camera!

Digital SLR for less than 500?
Is it possible to get a DSLR for less than 500 dollars? Because if I sell my current Digital Camera, I would have enough to buy a 500 dollars DSLR?
Where would be the best place to buy it as well?
And I have a Cannon Powershot S3 IS currently, and it’s a great little camera, but I really want to upgrade to DSLR because I really like photography.
Which camera would you recommend to get for a first time DSLR buyer? I’m looking at the Cannon Rebel XTI but it’s a bit pricey for my budget. The Nikon D40 looks like a good camera and good price too.

I was in those same crossroads: I still have my S3 around, and you might want to keep it since you might miss that silent shooting you can do with it.
For 500, you can get most of the basic models. If you’re on a budget in general, then you might want to avoid Canon/Nikon just because of the price of lenses and what you get out of it. Don’t think I’m bashing the series as I have respect for pioneers of the dslr generation that have rightfully won fans for their quality products, but people tend to miss some great dslr bodies with many features because they simply follow the crowd.
Some may argue that it’s a matter of consumer reliability that keeps people coming back to Canon/Nikon usage, and they’re partially right. The fact of the matter is that the dslr market is still one that is rapidly developing and Canon/Nikon took a head start. Some change to these mounts because they don’t get the variety of lenses Canon/Nikon have readily available thanks to the huge customer base they took in during the early DSLR days, and a fair number return regretting they left but don’t until much later, usually since they sold off their better glass for their old mounts in the process (Example: the many folks who grew up off the Pentax K1000).
There are a few that I think you could consider beyond the usual:
-Pentax K1/200D: Pentax glass is good. The Takumars were direct competitors with Zeiss for the time and you can often find some of their great primes on eBay for cheap. The 200 model uses a CMOS sensor that lowers noise decently, while the 100 is known for its infrared capability. Plus, if you wait a little longer, there’s the K-M coming out that will be for a cheaper price but offer many good features. By the way, all of these Pentax models? They use AA batteries.
-Olympus E520: the 4:3 mount is designed to accept multiple lens types. A fair number of the adapters will even keep autofocus for those lenses. The design is solid, and the recent Zuiko lenses are considered a class act. Plus, the design of the sensor and setup actually gives your telephoto lenses an even better range, which is always a bonus.
-Sony Alpha 1/200. Even though Sony’s new, their mount is not: they bought Minolta’s legacy. This gives you access to some incredible glass (G lenses, for example). The Alpha series has received good reviews in general, and I have heard that its liveview setup is great.
All of these mounts, by the way, have in-body Image Stabilization. It is not considered as good as the lens-based IS Canon/Nikon use, but those lenses cost 400 dollars more and will only work with that lens, as compared to the body IS working on all lenses.
No matter what you choose, you will get a good quality out of it as long as you research your lenses. The best thing to do is visit a camera shop, ask about the bodies and get a feel of it yourself so you can find something that feels comfortable for you to shoot with for prolonged periods of time. After all, it’s just as much about the shooter as it is the camera that makes a good photo. Have fun!
