Will an “equivalent” battery charger work as well as the brand name for my digital camera?

I lost my battery charger for my Cannon SD200 digital camera. I did a search so I could buy a new one and found a “SterlingTek” brand charger (says it’s equivalent to the Cannon brand) for much cheaper. However, I don’t want to buy it if it is not going to work (as well) or if it will “harm” my battery.

Battery chargers are battery chargers, nothing more. They don’t perform any magic, they simply charge batteries.

If the Sterling charger says it’s compatible with the Canon battery then go for it and save some money in the process.

So that’s the short, immediate answer to your question. But let me help a little more.

Battery chargers have only a few things you need to be aware of.

First of all operating voltage is important. Anything sold in your country is designed to operate at the prevailing voltage. What’s better though is to have a charger that operates from 100V to 240V. With that kind of charger you can travel anywhere in the world, plug it in and use it. So if you’re into traveling I’d check to see if it is universal in terms of input voltage. The universal ones are usually more expensive.

Second is charging time. Some chargers claim fifteen minute charges and they actually deliver too. Others can take as long as eighteen hours to do the same battery. Fast is not necessarily better, it works and saves you a lot of time, but it shortens the life of the battery. Eighteen hour charges do no damage to the battery but also take forever. Usually one hour to three hour charges are a reasonable compromise. That gets you a relatively quick charge while at the same time not stressing the battery.

Third is output. It should tell you on the battery casing what it expects in terms of output from the charger. It’s usually DC, usually a specific voltage and it normally shows you which pin is positive. Whatever charger you use to charge a battery, you have to make sure that the information on the battery in terms of its requirements matches what’s printed on the charger in terms of its output. If there is a match you charger will work.

Fourth is self protection. I thought that these days all chargers protected themselves from a faulty battery. Well I was wrong. I have an 18V charger for a Black and Decker drill that burned itself out because there was a short in the battery. When I complained about this B & D simply sent me another charger that had exactly the same problem. ARGH! While it should be a given that a charger does protect itself from a faulty battery, it seems prudent to ask just in case.

Finally, some chargers are “smart”. What does that mean? At minimum it will charge differently depending on the kind of battery that is being charged, NiCads have different requirements from NiMH ones. A smart charger knows the difference. Heat is a battery killer, so if the battery starts to get too hot the smart charger will sense the heat and turn itself off until the battery cools again. A smart charger also sense the level of charge and will turn itself off when the battery is fully charged. Smart chargers are also more expensive but often worth the money since they will protect the batteries being charged.

In terms of the charger you’re thinking of buying, I’d ask two questions. The first question is how long it takes to charge the battery. If it’s equal to, or less time than the Canon version go for it. If it’s considerably more time that could be why it’s cheap in which case you’ll have to decide how long you’re willing to wait for a full charge.

The second question is whether it’s universal or international. Canon chargers work on all voltages all over the world so no matter where you travel to, you can always plug them into an electrical outlet. If this one doesn’t that could also be why it’s cheaper. In this case you’ll have to ask if you’re ever going to travel to a country that has a different voltage.

There is of course also the obvious question of whether the battery physically fits into the charger but that doesn’t usually have to be asked if the description says it’s compatible.
