How To Buy Your First Camping Tent
To begin, I was never into the concept of camping. The idea of sleeping in a tent on the cold ground didn’t appeal to me. However, some of my friends would go camping every year and swear they loved it. So last year I decided to take the plunge and I went camping with some of my friends. I have to admit, I was hooked after the first night. I think the key was using the correct equipment. After my first camping trip, I decided to make the investment and buy a tent, sleeping bag and all of the other amenities. To save you some time, I have written down some tips that helped me buy my first camping tent.
The first step begins with determining the size tent you will need. When you start shopping for your tent you will see that tents are categorized by their capacity. For example, you will see two-person, three-person or four-person tents. One footnote is that you will want to buy a tent that is a little bit larger than your need. For example, if you are only looking for a two-person tent, you might want to consider a three-person or four-person tent. A two person tent will fit a maximum of two people and not much else. If you get a three-person or four-person tent you will have room for some of your gear as well. Now you might say why don’t I get a six person tent and have plenty of room? The only problem here is the extra weight that comes with a larger tent. Remember, you have to pack up and carry your tent. If you are like me, I wanted to pack as light as possible so I chose a tent that was just slightly bigger than my need.
After you have chosen the size of your tent, then you have to choose the tent that fits the environment where you will be camping. A three season tent will make the most sense for you if you are camping in the spring or summer. A four season tent is designed for extreme cold or harsher environments.
One of the most important parts of tent shopping is choosing the materials used for the tent construction. You will want a thicker or higher quality denier fabric if you want the tent to last for the long haul. However, tents will become more expensive when you use a higher quality fabric. You need to ask yourself how often you will be camping and using your tent. If you are using the tent for limited use you might be able to get away with a cheaper tent.
Lastly, make sure you pick up a footprint with your new tent. The footprint will be placed directly under your new tent and it will help protect the base of your tent from unnecessary wear and tear.
For my final point, after you buy your first camping tent, I would take the time and put it together at home. This will give you an idea on how the tent is constructed and you can make sure you have all the parts. You don’t want to arrive at your campsite after a long hike and realize you are missing a part.

Can anybody recommend a tent? (Read detail)?
Ok, I’m part of a scout troop, and need to get my own tent. I would need a 1 or 2 person tent. I go away camping at least every 3 weeks so my tent needs to be durable. I live in Ireland and mostly camp in different parts of Ireland so my tent needs to be able to put with all types of weather (rain, snow, sun etc.). And finally my needs to be light Weight as I do a lot of overnight hiking. Can anybody help find a tent for me or even give me a tent (joke) bearing in mind what I need and keeping the cost down as much as possible. Please send me any links that you have as-well. Oh yeah can tell the difference between ultralight and light Weight. Thanks people
Since cost is a factor ( when is it isn’t?) the Coleman range may be your best bet. I’ve got three Colemans which have stood up to gales and heavy rain on the Manx hills, on the Cairngorm and Snowdonia, and even in the Alps.
One of them , the Coleman Raid, goes with me on every backpacking trip in case I get stuck anywhere. It weighs less than two pounds, and is very low, which helps in a high wind but is more awkward for changing.. I made an extra flysheet for it from proofed nylon ex-army combat blankets, which are green and blend in well in the hills. Good for birdwatching and extra wind protection for the little Raid.
Ultralight is a fuzzy term but the Raid would just fit into that category in most people’s minds though for some a 1 1/2 pound tent or a bivvy bag would represent the limit and for others a four pound tent is ultralight.
If you can run with it on a two-day race and sleep in it, that’s ultralight. It’s minimum-weight stuff that will still give you shelter and a dry night.
Lightweight can be anything above that up to around seven pounds.
The Coleman Viper fits that class. It’s served well in bad conditions. I take it on the hills for astro nights because there’s room to move and plenty of space for scopes and stuff. It was my ‘take-everywhere’ tent before I got the Raid.
It’s half the price now than when I bought mine, and it was good value then. Mine is the two-man version. The one-man, which is lighter, is on here

We see the Irish mountains at times from the Isle of Man and use them as an indicator of rain. Wet air bends the light round the horizon like a prism, so when we see the Mountains of Mourne or the Wicklow Hills, we expect rain. In the Lake District they say the same when they can see the Isle of Man from there….
Vango are good, but a bit more expensive. They are respected round the world for their Force Ten mountain tents, but those are top-dollar profressional kit. Mine is over twenty years old and still good, which is pleasing ‘cos I sure can’t afford a new Force Ten at over £300.

They make lighter and more affordable mountain tents which I can vouch for the quality of, and like Coleman they do ‘canvas bungalows’ and more portable and lighter family tents.
