What is a comparable camera to the Nikon D40 or D60, but less expensive?

I am looking into getting an SLR camera or the like, and I very interested in the Nikon D60 or D40, but I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on a similar camera for less money? Thanks!

Nikon D40 is quite cheapest DSLR you will get. Any cheaper than the camera and companies cannibalize sales of its high-end point and shoot. You could try searching on eBay or Craigslist to use a Canon XT or Canon 10D. On the other hand, you could get a film SLR. Just be sure to get one that is recent enough that your lenses will still work if you decide to switch to digital. Used Canon EOS SLR can go for as little as $ 100 on Craigslist.
