Help with photo lighting??

I have a Nikon D50 and am planning to take some portrait photos of fans in my church. The use of two flashes 33 inch white umbrella, which is a good starting point for configuring the camera? The ambient light in the room will be the sunlight through the windows, and maybe a few fluorescent bulbs.

It depends on a few things. What purpose will you use? How strong are your umbrella flashes? How far and how high are your flares? Assuming ISO 200, I guess you start around f1.8 @ 50mm, 1/30s But then again, this is a digital camera! Simply experience for a few minutes and the judge using both your eyes and your histogram! Tips: – Since you're using a flash (instead of flood lights / soft case) its white balance can be off and you can end up doing a manual white balance or minor corrections later. – For a group photo with more than 1 line of people, you may want to expand the depth of field a bit to get everyone focused: lower shutter speed and aperture mesh to close a little. – You may want to add backlighting to give a few highlights.
