How do I connect my wireless trigger with my 580EXII flash?

I just received my "4-Channel Wireless Flash Receiver-tried connecting to my Canon580EXII but the flash does not seem to have a jack to connect the cable. Does anyone know how to guide me through? If it is not necessary to connect the receiver with the flash via cable perhaps I have to adjust the flash settings? Should I put a slave? I tried to no avail. The flash goes off, when you connect the transmitter to the receiver via cable when you press the test button, only then. My camera is a Canon 400D.

I'm a little confused for your question …. but … Usually have to synchronize the two so they are on the same channel. It is usually a simple process in the instructions. I have a 400d and use wireless too. I have a transmitter that sits on my shoe and my recieverrs flashes.
