I desperately need help choosing a digital camera?

Digital Camera:

- Point & Shoot Digital Camera
- Takes CLEAR pictures ..a NEED.
- One word, Cheap. $350 at most Or around there, at most. Although I want a cheap camera, I want the camera to produce exspensive pictures you know?
- Fairly small in size, I want to be able to carry it around.
- As for appeareance? I don’t care for, as long as it takes clear pictures and such I am definatly satisfied.
- High in MegaPixel.
8.0MP at most. I am really looking for a 10.1MP Digital Camera, but Im willing to go as low as 8.0MP ..just as high MP as I can get, that takes clear pics, and such as I listed above!

I’m going to suggest a slightly larger camera, but if you are looking for CLEAR pictures, this one is much better.

I own a few Nikon DSLR’s and I’d buy the Canon Powershot A630 or A640 for myself. These cameras have the larger sensor (1/1.8″ or 5.2 mm x 7.2 mm) that is nearly double the sensor size you find in many point and shoot cameras and this translates into better image quality. They allow fully automatic use or total user control and offer several stages in between. The only significant difference between these cameras is that the A630 is 8 MP and the A640 is 10 MP.

If you’re going to spend up to $230, look at a Canon Powershot A630. My brother has had his A630 for over a year and it’s a very nice camera. You can get it at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) for $192.

If you can go to $300, look at the 10 MP Canon Powershot A640. This is an excellent camera. It sells for $260 and you can add a very nice memory card for under $40. The images from the A640 compare VERY favorably with the images from a Canon G7, which costs about twice as much.

For either camera, buy a 1 or 2 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera. The Ultra II would be excellent, but if you are really into video, you might prefer the faster Extreme III. These cards cost from about $25-45 at B&H and several other outlets.

Check the sample images at Steve’s, because there are many that are of the same subject. Personally, I look at the sky to see how it holds up. In the Sony, I see some blotches that I do not see in the Canon. This is probably at the best possible ISO, also, since they specify “Auto” was used. You have to click on the image to view it full-sized to see this,but this also makes me think that the higher ISO’s on the Sony are not going to be so great. It’s a smaller sensor, after all.

First of all, the owner opinions on the Sony give it only an average score of 3.25 out of 5.0 and the Canon users gave the A640 a score of 4.45 out of 5.0.

Advantages for the Canon include:
-it is 10 MP instead of 8 MP, which is really only a slight advantage, but it gives more detail in enlargements
-the sensor is twice as big as the Sony, which makes for sharper pictures with less digital noise
-the Canon zooms to an equivalent of 140 mm instead of 105 mm, which is a significant difference
-close macro focus
-MUCH greater range of shutter speeds, high and low
-higher flash output and ability to add external flash
-aperture priority, shutter speed priority, and total manual control – none of which are offered by the Sony
-uses cheaper, more commonly available SD memory cards
-3 quality levels instead of 2 (probably no big deal)
-flip-out and twist monitor opens up some real possibilities for creative point of view in your pictures
-uses “AA” batteries, which are available everywhere if your rechargeable batteries die. The A630/640 is well-known as one of THE best cameras for battery longevity, though.

Advantages for the Sony include:
-higher ISO, if it is really useable
-image stabilization, which is a significant advantage
-uses Li-Ion batteries, which are supposed to last longer than “AA” batteries, but see my note above
-small enough to fit in any pocket

The one real advantage for the Sony is image stabilization, but I think the sensor and all the rest would make me choose the Canon.
