canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi (450D) Help?
im thinking of upgrading to a dslr camera… but i really know nothing about them.. i have been using a basic point and shoot camera for about 2 years… the EOS Digital Rebel XSi looks like a very good, and almost affordable camera.. my question is, do i have to buy a different lens for every different type of photo i want to take.. for example, can i take macro shots, portraits and landscape shots using the same lens? if so, what type of lens is it? please tell me everything you know.. because i am starting to get very interested in photography!!
A DSLR is an investment not only in money but in the time you must be willing to spend to actually learn how to use the camera. Taking classes is definitely recommended.
There are several classifications of lenses. Ultra-wide angle, wide angle, normal, short, medium and long telephoto, primes and zooms.
First, the primes. These are fixed-focal length lenses such as a 16mm, 21mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 100mm, etc. They do not zoom – the focal length is set. They are slightly sharper and nearly always faster than zoom lenses. A 50mm f1.4 prime would be ideal for shooting in low-light without flash.
Ultra-wide angle lenses are 10mm, 12mm 14mm, 16mm. They are special-purpose lenses used when you are in a tight situation such as a small room and need to photograph a group of people. They can also produce excellent scenics/landscapes. At the extreme end (10mm, 12mm) vertical lines at the edge of the frame may look like this ( ) instead of like this I I.
Wide-angle lenses are those of 21mm, 24mm, 35mm. These are used when you want to include more of a scene without any distortion – vertical lines at the edge of the frame remain vertical I I.
A 50mm lens is called a normal lens since it approximates the angle of view of the human eye. More famous photos have been made with a 50mm lens than all the other focal lengths combined.
A short telephoto is between 70mm to 135mm. Useful when you want to eliminate part of a scene and/or for portraits.
Medium telephotos are 200mm to 300mm. Good for some sports or to keep a safe distance from an unfriendly subject.
Long telephotos are 400mm and up. Useful for field sports and nature photography.
Zoom lenses are those lenses with variable focal lengths such as 18-70mm or 50-250mm or 100-400mm. They are compromises but also very useful when you want to travel light. Often you can have a great day out photographing with an 18-70mm and a 70-280mm zoom. The major drawback is that zoom lenses are slower than prime lenses and usually have a variable f-stop such as f3.5/5.0. What this means is at the short end (say 70mm) the f-stop is f3.5 but when you zoom to the long end (say 280mm) the f-stop becomes f5.0 – a full 1 stop difference*. So if your shutter speed at 70mm at f3.5 is 1/250 sec. when you zoom to 280mm at f5.0 your shutter speed will drop to 1/125 sec. This can be the difference in hand-holding a lens or using a tripod or having a lens with built-in Image Stabilization (IS). (NOTE: An old “Rule of Thumb” states that your shutter speed should always be 1/focal length. So to hand-hold a 280mm lens you’ll want a shutter speed of 1/250 sec.) Of course, a lens with IS (or a camera with IS built into the body) overcomes this. The ideal zoom will have a fixed f-stop that remains the same from 70mm to 280mm. Unfortunately they are rather expensive.
Zoom lenses usually have the word “macro” attached to them. IMO this is misleading. Why? Because a true macro lens is a fixed focal length (50mm, 60mm, 90mm 100mm, etc.) and will give you a 1:1 (life-sized) image. A zoom with close-focusing ability will seldom give more than a 1:4 (1/4 life size) image. A true macro lens is designed for close focusing, has a flat field of focus (needed for photographing stamps, etc.) and is designed for minimum light fall-off from center to edge and maximum sharpness from center to edge.

I realize this has been a lengthy answer and may have added to your confusion. That is why I strongly suggest taking classes.
Since you are shopping for a camera, I suggest spending some time at http://www.digitalcameraguide.com and read reviews of the different DSLR cameras within the same price range. You may find that Sony or Pentax offer more features and benefits than Nikon or Canon for the same money.
Buying your new camera from a local professional camera shop is recommended. However, if you must shop on-line, here are some known trusted sites:
http://www.keh.com
http://www.adorama.com
http://www.bhphotovideo.com
http://www.beachcamera.com
Unfortunately, many on-line sellers are scam artists. If a deal just seems too good to be true, check the seller at http://www.resellerratings.com.
Welcome to the fascinating, frustrating world of advanced photography.
