SLR Lenses: Camera Brand vs. Third Party Brand?

I am looking to purchase my first SLR camera (Probably a Canon XTi) and I have been looking at some packages that contain additional lenses. The packages that come with the additional Canon lenses seem to be more expensive than those that come with third party lenses (ie. Sigma or Tamron). How big a deal is it to use a 3rd party lense vs, the Canon lense? Will I lose functions by not using the branded lense? Or is this a case of paying extra for the Canon name? Thanks for the help, this SLR and lense changing stuff is all new to me.

It is a big deal. You will be buying a new DSLR every four or five years to keep up with new technology, but lenses should last you for decades (at least four decades). It is better to invest in the best lens you can afford. I have gone so far as to buy a good used lens made by Nikon, rather than buying a new third-party lens”

“Nikon often includes secret features in cameras and in lenses to make them compatible with the next five years or so of secretly planned technology. ”

“For instance, the 1988 F4 is completely compatible with AF-I and AF-S lenses which didn’t appear until 1992 and 1998.”

“Nikon AI lenses in 1977 already had secret lugs on the back which couple lens information to cameras for Matrix metering, not introduced until the FA of 1983.”

“Zoom AF lenses, ever since they were introduced in 1986, have always had focal length encoders which insert data into today’s digital cameras’ EXIF data. ”

“AF lenses of today (mockingly even the G versions) still have mechanical lugs for backwards compatibility with the matrix meter of the 1983 FA, and manual focus lenses still have prongs for coupling to the 1959 F.”

What this means to you, is the third-party lenses do not have these features.
