500D camera – A camera functions beautifully with all at an unbeatable price!
I had the 500D camera for about almost a week and after some extensive use, here are my thoughts:
1. 15.1-megapixel sensor. Yes, high-megapixel account is impressive, but keep in mind that, when approaching higher resolutions, it is necessary to ensure the lens on the SLR can be solved that detail. Unfortunately, the included 18-55mm IS lens is functional, but the high resolution that really shows what the quality of the lens. Even if we take the approach appropriate images can appear smooth with this kit lens. The shots I've taken with Canon EF-S 17-85mm and EF 70-200mm L lenses are clear. I have no complaints about the quality image. There are some problems with noise at higher ISOs that do not seem to appear on the Nikon digitals, but overall, the quality is amazing for the price. Skin tones, textures, colors are reproduced with great precision.
2. DIGIC 4. DIGIC 4 appears to process / save the 15-megapixel image at the same time (if not faster) than the DIGIC III on the XSi (including RAW + JPG mode). I also noticed that a higher ISO, sensor and DIGIC 4 processor to produce images with less noise overall compared to its predecessors.
3. LCD. The LCD screen 920,000 pixels is large (3 "), crisp, vibrant and perfectly visible even in bright sunlight. In comparison, the Canon XSi DSLR (which replaces the 500D Camera) also has a 3 "LCD, but with 230,000 pixels. The viewing angle is great too and the LCD is easily visible around 180 degrees around.
4. ISO 12800. Canon and Amazon are correctly identifying the House maxes 500D ISO 3200. Some less reputable dealers are a list of ISO 12800, which should be ignored. ISO 6400 and 12800 are expanded ISO settings adjustments. Photos taken in these two values are ISO 3200 ISO 6400 images pushed to 12,800 or by the DIGIC 4 chip before you put the memory card. These images are very grainy and contains a large amount of noise to the point of being used only for snapshots or add an artistic effect to certain compositions.
5. Penta-mirror. Canon is still using a camera on the 500D is disappointing. The image of penta-mirror viewfinder is functional, but still significantly darker than that of the penta-prism viewfinder on the Nikon D90 (which is the main competitor of the House 500D.) I really would have preferred that Canon has maintained the XSi 12.2-megapixel sensor, 1080p video forgone altogether, and perhaps raised the cost of the camera expands to cover the cost of production using a penta-prism in the 500D camera. Honestly, unless massive crop your images, or create pictures large, the difference between 12.2 and 15.1 megapixels is really insignificant.
6. Size. This is the same body as the XSi, and therefore a bit on the smaller side compared to other digital SLR cameras. I have small hands, so the 500D camera is comfortable for me. If you have large hands, I can see this being a very difficult camera to use for a long period of time. If you do not have handled a Canon XT XTi XSi or, I suggest you go to a store and hold the 500D camera yourself before you buy online. (I will upload a photo of the 500D camera in my hands to the User Gallery a size reference.)
7. HD video. Yes, the Canon marketing department made a horrible marketing decision and pushed The House on shelves 500D limit 1080p recording at 20fps (frames per second). Recognize this as a marketing gimmick that allows them to put a sticker on the box 1080p camera. The 1080p @ 20fps is fine most times, but looks like a choppy if you have a lot of action in the frame or frame quickly. The 720p video 500D camera is recorded at 30 fps and is clean, smooth, and sufficient for all but the most demanding consumers. One of the main criticisms is that although sound is recorded in mono, there is no input for an external microphone.
A lot of comments from pre-production on the target = "_self" title = "Canon EOS 500D"> 500D Camera criticize its inability to auto focus automatically during recording. I will not to put much weight on this criticism, especially because none of the other two SLR cameras with HD recording capabilities (Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D90) automatically focus automatically during recording either. What you can do with the 500D camera is pan / zoom of the lens and then press the AE lock (*) to make the autofocus of the camera on the new theme (all during the recording.) One problem with using the AE lock button for the camera's autofocus is that the microphone of the camera is on the front left upper body near the lens mount. Therefore, the lens motor noise is recorded both and environmental sounds. Even with my Canon USM quieter (ultasonic motor) lenses, the lens motor sound is quite strong in video playback. Although remember, you can always manually turn the focus ring on the target to get back your object of focus. It is not easy, but after a little practice, not all is too much, either.
Ultimately, you should not let the limitations of HD recording domain in one way or another. This is an SLR camera – a camera is not video. The HD video is a great feature, but if you're looking for something in particular to take video, look elsewhere. There is much more better, cheap video cameras out there that can record 1080p.
8. Record button. For some reason, the video record button is next to the LCD (the same button used for direct printing). The first few times you take video, intuitively you will find the button shutter to take pictures. The reason for this change is that you can take a still image while recording video, but in doing so, stop recording.
9. Battery life. My first fully charged battery only lasted about 250 shots (without flash), but all charges and I have been in the range of 500-700 shots per charge. I'm guessing the first charge was short-lived because I spent a little time learning the camera, their menus and settings.
10. Live View. I honestly can not review this as I have not used too much yet – I prefer to use the viewfinder. A feature that I can say is good is that, in the LCD, you can digitally zoom (up to 10x) on a section of your shot to make sure it is properly focused. This and precision approach can really help if you are into macro photography.
11. HDMI cable. 500D The Chamber has an output type HDMI C in the body that allows you to directly display images and video on an HDTV. A minor criticism is that the type C HDMI cable is not included in the box. You have to buy it separately. Would have been nice to include, since it is an expensive cable.
Conclusion. The 500D camera is a little light at the end, but Construction is still feels solid. For price point of the camera, it would be hard to find any digital SLR out there that gives you all the capacity and rate of growth of the Canon 500D. The camera is intuitive enough for new on the picture to pick up and learn easily, but configurable enough for amateurs. If the video is not a big deal for you, then get the Canon XSi.
Very little of the House has 500D (other than ISO 3200 and a sharper screen) that the XSi does not. And with the release of the 500D camera, you can probably pick up an XSi used for a great price on eBay. My wife recently gave birth and I'm not looking to record without end (never seen) video tapes of our son, but I have several clips minute of it as it grows through the years. I've always been more inclined to photography, so this camera gives me a very versatile digital SLR that Need with the wonderful ability to record HD video I want.
