Xsi Rebel – Worth Every Penny
I have had a Canon A620 for about 2 years before this. It was an awesome P&S, but it died after going through a whole lot of pain and agony that I put it through (sandy beaches, construction sites, oily garages). I decided to upgrade to a DSLR this time around and had been researching them for about 3-4 months. I was set on buying a D60 for a while and then the Rebel XS came out so I started comparing features and then saw that for a little bit more, I could get the XS which would have Live View, AEB and some other cool stuff.
But at that point, the XSi Rebel was only about 30 bucks away, so I dropped the cash and I must say I AM VERY HAPPY with my purchase. Nothing to really say about Amazon, their shipping was ridiculous as usual (came in exactly 2 days after I ordered – wish other places would mean 2-day when they say 2 day shipping). The camera itself is a dream to use. The Live View makes a big difference if you are sitting it on a tree stump or a tripod and composing with a little bit more stability. The camera feels solid in your hands and the lenses take a beating (actually hit the kit lens against a door once when turning around). The grips on the kit lens seem like plastic yet somehow feel rubbery – but in the end, my fingers love em and I haven’t had any problems with prolonged contact while trying to get focus/zoom just right.
The rubber grips on the XSi Rebel aren’t exactly cushion-y, but the texture on the grips makes the camera body feel more secure in your hands (definitely worth the extra 30 or so bucks). You also get the proximity sensor for the LCD (turns it off if its close to your face) and the extra 2 MP (more cropping!).
That said, the camera strap leaves you wanting for something better. It looks nice, but its a little small if you are a big guy and its not padded at all so it feels a little tough on your neck – so factor in some extra spending money for a good strap and/or a good bag.
If you are buying this as a first time DSLR user, its a good investment (you can of course settle for something less… no problem with that, but you might as well drop the money for the best in this price range of DSLRs). Be prepared to get a LOT of bad pictures in your first couple of weeks with a DSLR as you get used to judging your shots on the review LCD after your take em, but after you do… the extra speed and better quality lenses are completely worth it.
XSi Rebel – Fantastic Digital SLR
This camera takes some very beautiful pictures. You can read the other pros because they’re all the same and I’m just going to list the few (small) cons.
1. If you switch the colors from RBG to Adobe, the camera will name your pictures _MG_1234 instead of IMG_1234. I don’t know why they decided to do this but it makes sorting pictures by filename a difficult challenge. You’ll be sitting there going “Where the hell is picture 4563 at?”
2. By default the camera loves the flash. Not on the manual settings but on the automatic settings. It’ll pop it up for just about everything. I know it uses the flash for the Autofocus but the focusing works just fine when the camera is on a manual mode and the flash is down.
Those are the two minor annoyances that I’ve ran into. I still would not trade this camera for another brand. If you never plan on changing colors or you’re not crazy obsessive over your flash, then you’ll love this camera. I know I do. Another thing that I greatly enjoy about it is the BULB setting on Full Manual. It allows some amazing night shots of the stars or landscapes, just be sure to use a tripod and a remote shutter release.

How to clean and keep lens safe on Canon Rebel XS?
I was wondering what is the best way to maintain and clean the LCD screen and lens of the Rebel XS. Also, is it better to usually leave the lens on, or remove it. I have a bag for the camera and was wondering if it is safe to just leave it in the bag with the lens facing up and cap on or will it get ruined in the bag. I heard there were lens protectors you can buy, but do they alter the image quality at all?
To clean the LCD and lens, a microfiber cloth and a blower is usually all you need. Microfiber cloths are pretty much the cloth that you wipe spectacles with, you can get them anymore, for cheap. Blowers are usually available at any photographic equipment tool. Just opt for the cheaper squeeze type, as opposed to the pressurized air in a can.
I dont see why leaving the lens in a camera bag with it facing up would ruin it in any way O_O When a lenses is not going to be used in a extended period of time, replace both the rear and and front caps, place it in a camera bag in a dry, cool, dark place for storage. If you have a lens attached on the camera, it’s best to just leave it there unless you’re changing lenses. That way, you’ll avoid dust from entering and adhering itself onto the camera sensor.
Those lens protectors you are talking about are called lens filters. Most people buy a UV filter and leave it on the lens all the time. They come relatively cheap, and a cracked filter is certainly a lot cheaper to replace than a cracked lens. UV filters do not alter image quality. If you’re concerned with flare or ghosting, opt for a multi-coated one. You can tell from a coated filter from a non-coated filter from the reflection it makes. Coated ones are usually have dark magenta, green reflections, while non-coated ones have clear reflections, much like the ones you see from a glass window. To me, they make relatively little difference to image quality. If you’re concerned with flare, attach a lens hood or block the light source.
