How to expand my knowledge of photography?

Hello I am very interested in photography, and I love my Nikon film camera. My pictures are great, but I guess nothing compared to real professionals. The problem is – I'm still not knowledgeable on the technical side of it! I find it a bit difficult to understand the basics (aperture, shutter speed, exposure …)! It's a bit frustrating because I want to do is go out and shoot and practice, but do not want to lose the huge amount of money needed to develop 20 + films. I have access to a digital camera (sonyalpha) but I really feel I have to learn the basics first. Can anyone help me? Give me a small tutorial? Provide me with an easy step by step web site? This would greatly help. Thanks are referring to a photography class that anyone can have in the community, or a college / university-based class? I have sold photos to Web sites, but it really does make me a dollar sign $.
