f-stops, basic information manual opening of the camera.?

I have a minolta x700, I took a photography class in high school I do not remember too much of. Can anyone, in a simple easy to understand, explain to me about f-stops, aperture, and anything that leaves me. I know there is some kind of chart and what not that goes along with f stops I do not know, can someone just give me some easy answers on how these things? Thank you.

A good exhibition is a combination of two variables, the opening, as measured by the number f-stop and shutter speed. If you set a variable, then the other variable must change to maintain the same exposure. The aperture controls the amount of light coming through the lens. Shutter speed controls the time the light actually hits the film or sensor. Therefore, if you let in more light, to maintain the same exposure, the amount of time the shutter be opened would be reduced. Similarly, if you let in less light (a number larger f-stop), you have to expose the sensor / film longer (speed slow shutter).
