Should I be afraid of buying HD?

I have been trying to find the best HD camcorder for the money – and have pretty much resolved to purchase the Canon Vixia HF11; however, I have been reading review after review, and it seems a TON of people are having editing and conversion problems.

I don’t have an HD-DVD player (or Blue Ray for that matter) or HD-DVD/Blue Ray burner in my PC. I have an Intel Pentium D Dual Core 3.0 GHz processor with 3.5 GB RAM – will that be good enough to edit the videos?

If I wanted to make a DVD for family, I would have to convert my video to get it to SD so they can all watch it on their DVD players (how much quality would I lose? other issues with this?) – but uploading to YouTube and others could be done in HD. Should I just purchase a SD camcorder, and not have the worries about conversions and editing problems?

If that’s the case… I have no idea which camcorder to purchase – I want a good quality video for shooting videos of my new baby growing up!!! What to do???????

Don’t be afraid of getting an HD camcorder.

Yes they do take a lot of processing power to edit the videos. Your computer should be ok, if you can increase the ram, and if you have a little spare cash get another HDD to use for video editing (scratch disk) it will speed up the whole process.

If you use a editing package that will edit the video directly from the camera all the better as converting video WILL loose quality, but to reduce this leave the final conversion to the time that you put it onto your dvd, (std dvd Not blue ray) you will then achieve the best results. Another plus for getting an HD camcorder is that prices are dropping all the time for Blue Ray equipment, so give it a little time and most people will be able to afford to convert. also by leaving the video on your new drive when you do convert you will be able to redo the videos in full HD. A little word of advice try not to use anything other than the best settings for your camera.

There are free editing packages around, but its the old story you get what you pay for!!!! Sony Vegas is good, I like Premiere, but that is a very resource hungry prog, 3gb absolute minimum ram. Most of the better software offer free trials so you can give them a go before you part with your money.
