Top 3 Hip-Hop Releases of the Year 2009

2009 was an interesting year for hip-hop—auto-tune is still prevalent, Jay-Z is still trying way too hard to be relevant, Lil’ Wayne is still a drugged out weirdo, but it’s the young kids who seemed to really control the year. With weak selling albums by gangster rappers like 50 Cent, 2009 could be seen as the year that gangster rap was killed by Kid Cudi, Drake and Wale, three inspiring and promising newcomers. It was also the year that old-timers like Raekwon, Mos Def and DJ Quik and Kurrupt returned with great new albums showing why they are legends in the game. Here is my list of the top three hip hop albums of the year.

Raekwon – “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II”

Nobody really believed Rae had it in him to produce a worthy follow up to his classic “Cuban Linx” album, but he managed to do it, even after numerous delays and album push backs, he created an album that his fans always knew he had in him. Mixing his always dexterous wordplay with some choice beats from J Dilla, Pete Rock, RZA, and even Dre, he managed to put together an album that flows like a movie and proves why he is one of the most respected and influential hip-hop artists of the decade.

Drake – “So Far Gone”

A monster mix tape that has had everyone buzzing, “So Far Gone” showed that a mixtape can be just as good as an album, with the right flow and track order, it doesn’t have to be a cobbled together throwaway to hold fans over until an album. Drake proved himself as one of the youngest and most promising MCs and singers in the hip-hop game with the mixtape and the huge smash success of “Successful” and “Best I Ever Had.” Since then Drake has already worked with such heavyweights as Jay-Z, Timbaland and Lil’ Wayne, building up even more anticipation for his official album in 2010.

Cam’ron – “Crime Pays”

A return to form and small comeback for one of hip-hops weirdest and most eccentric artists, “Crime Pays” is Cam doing what he does best—twisting his strange and clever words around a bunch of no-name produced beats. Cam’ron shows that you don’t need the most expensive beats or big name producers to put out a good record—you just have to be a good rapper—which Cam’ron is in spades; he can turn a cliche rhyme about bmw rims into a work of art.. Few can compare to Cam’ron personality and swagger in the rap game making “Crime Pays” another underrated success for the NY rapper.

Better rapper: Cam’ron or Lil Wayne?

I’m just starting to get into Cam’s music. Crime Pays is a dope album.

Killa Cam, FTW.

Yeah, I like “Crime Pays” too. It was the last album I bought (got it when I was in Chicago). The songs “Get It In Ohio,” “Who,” and “Curve” hit hard. Also the singles “Silky (No Homo),” “Cookies-N-Apple Juice,” and “My Job” are good tracks too. “Woo Hoo” is dope as well.

edit: I like Lil’ Wayne but I just find Cam to be a more entertaining rapper. I listen to Cam everyday.
